How do you keep a party tent warm in cold weather?
A warm party tent takes three things: the tent for a roof, sidewalls to stop the wind, and propane heaters to warm the air inside. Wind is what makes it feel colder than it is (at 45 degrees, a 15 mph breeze feels like 38 by the National Weather Service wind chill chart), so the walls do half the work before a heater is even lit. How many heaters do I need for my tent?
Each of our commercial propane patio heaters warms 10 to 15 feet in every direction. As a rule of thumb, plan one heater for every 300 to 400 square feet of tent: the low end when it's near freezing, the high end on a mild fall evening.

We have 4 of the big heaters, so a party bigger than a 20x60 should plan on the walls doing more of the work. For a small group on a patio, the compact patio heater is $75 and we have 5 of those. Seated guest counts use 15 to 20 square feet per guest, the same math as our tent size guide.
How many sidewalls do I need?
Start with the side the wind comes from. On most breezy evenings, two panels on that side do most of the job. Choose window panels ($25) if you want the view and the daylight, or solid white ($25) if you want privacy and the most wind blocking. You can close three sides, but always leave one side or an entrance open while heaters are running. More on that next.
Is it safe to run a propane heater under a tent?
Patio heaters are outdoor heaters, and they burn propane, so they need fresh air moving through. Four rules keep a heated tent safe:
- Never close every wall. Leave at least one side or an entrance open while any heater is lit.
- Keep the clearance. Keep heaters away from the tent roof, sidewalls, tablecloths and decorations. Follow the clearance printed on the heater.
- Don't move a lit heater. Turn it off and let it cool first.
- Keep kids and pets back. The top of a patio heater gets very hot.
